Landon Powell was born and raised in Apex, North Carolina. He attended the University of South Carolina from 2000-2004 where he played for the South Carolina Gamecock baseball team. Landon was twice named an All- SEC performer as well as being named to the All-American team in 2003 and 2004. Along with being named to the Dean’s List all four years, Landon was honored as USC’s top male athlete in 2004, and South Carolina Amateur Male Athlete of the Year for 2004. His team went to the College World Series three years in a row, once playing for the National Championship in 2002.
During his time in Omaha, Landon was named to the All- Tournament Team in ’02 and ’04. In June of 2010, Landon was named to the CWS All-Time Legends Team, which commemorates the 70 years of the CWS at Rosenblatt Stadium. In 2004, he was the first round draft pick for the Oakland Athletics.
After recovering from two ACL knee surgeries in three years, Landon realized his childhood dream of reaching the big leagues in 2009. On May 9, 2010, Landon became the 19th catcher in Major League history to catch a perfect game!
Through these blessings from God, Landon has had to overcome some adversity. Aside from the two ACL knee reconstructions in which he received ligaments from tissue donation, in January of 2009 Landon was diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis; a rare liver disease with no known cure. This disease can be controlled with medicine, but Landon was informed that he will need a liver transplant at some point in his life. Because of this, organ and tissue donation has become very important to the Powell family.
