Donors On The Diamond 2011

The Powells

Donors On The Diamond 2011-an evening of entertainment on Flour Field in Greenville, S.C. will take place on Sunday, October 23rd from 4 to 7 p.m. Once again this year there will be fun activities and entertainment for the entire family. Hosted by former USC Gamecock and current Oakland A’s major league baseball catcher Landon Powell, this event will benefit Donate Life South Carolina and will help raise awareness of the need for South Carolina residents to register as organ, eye and tissue donors.

Following last year’s successful inaugural event, Landon Powell and Donate Life South Carolina are proud to announce that the 2011 event will feature Greenville’s own high energy 80’s cover band Retro Vertigo! It will also have a spectacular silent auction of autographed sports memorabilia from MLB stars Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Josh Hamilton, Mark Texeira and several others.

USC Baseball Coach Ray Tanner

Landon, a 2004 graduate of the Universityof South Carolina and current major league baseball player, is a recipient of tissue donations as a result of his two ACL surgeries. He also has a rare liver disease known as autoimmune hepatitis that will eventually require him to have a transplant. This condition led Landon and his wife Allyson – who make their permanent home in her native Greenville, SC- to take up the cause of organ, eye and tissue donation.  Donors on the Diamond is their brainchild.

Every 11 minutes another person is added to the national transplant waiting list and approximately 1,000 people in South Carolina currently need an organ transplant. Many will die without more people becoming donors. The public can sign up to be donors at the SC organ donor registry website.

Approximately 400 people attended the 2010 event
